The Essential Guide to Bulwark FR Safety Ratings

When your job involves exposure to electrical arcs or flash fires, your clothing isn't just a uniform—it's Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Bulwark FR has led the industry for over 50 years, but understanding the technical specs on the label is crucial for your safety.

[!IMPORTANT] FR stands for Flame Resistant, not fireproof. FR garments are designed to self-extinguish when the ignition source is removed, significantly reducing the severity of burn injuries.

1. Understanding ATPV (Arc Thermal Performance Value)

The most common rating you'll see on a Bulwark garment is the ATPV. This number represents the amount of incident energy (in cal/cm²) that the fabric can support before there is a 50% probability of a second-degree burn.

  • Higher Number = Better Protection. A shirt with an ATPV of 8.6 provides more protection than one rated at 4.0.
  • Layering: You can layer FR garments to achieve a higher total ATPV, but the calculation isn't a simple addition. Check manufacturer specs for layered arc ratings.

2. HRC and PPE Categories

The NFPA 70E standard groups arc flash hazards into four categories (formerly HRC, now PPE Categories). Bulwark garments are clearly labeled to match these:

PPE CategoryMinimum ATPV (cal/cm²)Typical Bulwark Garment
Category 14Lightweight Work Shirt
Category 28Standard Work Pant / Coverall
Category 325Heavyweight Hood & Parka
Category 440Multilayer Flash Suit

3. Why Choose Bulwark FR?

Bulwark doesn't just meet the minimum standards; they pioneer them. Their fabrics—including Excel FR® and Nomex® IIIA—are tested under extreme conditions to ensure they never melt, drip, or support combustion.

Laundering Tips for Safety

To maintain the FR properties of your Bulwark gear:

  1. Avoid Chlorine Bleach: It can weaken some FR fibers.
  2. No Fabric Softeners: They contain flammable fats that can coat the fabric.
  3. No Starch: Starch is flammable and can build up in the weave.
